Five True Facts about Vaping

Many smokers around the world want to give up their vice. Latest surveys have shown that 7 out of 10 smokers want to stop their unhealthy and unpleasant habit. Usually, they really want to do this for health reasons, because smoking can increase the risk of heart disease and cancer and can damage all organs in the body. Nearly a third of heart failure deaths are due to smoking or passive smoking.
In addition, smoking is costly and has numerous cosmetic disadvantages, such as an unpleasant odour, the accumulation of cigarette butts in ashtrays, and the discoloration of teeth, curtains and wallpaper, in addition to the ongoing social ostracism.
There are now electronic cigarettes that can facilitate the transition to a smoke-free life. But is the consumption of e-cigarettes really the ideal solution at the end? Is vaping and the inhalation of heated liquid chemicals better than the use of classic tobacco products? The Director of Clinical Research at the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, Michael Blaha, recently stated that:

Truth #1: Vaping is less damaging than smoking traditional cigarettes

Nicotine derived from tobacco is heated in the e-cigarette. Flavours and other chemicals that generate vapour are added and substances are inhaled during vaping.
A traditional tobacco cigarette contains around 7,000 chemicals, many of which are highly toxic. It is not yet known which chemicals are contained exactly in the vapour of the e-cigarette. Nevertheless, Blaha said there was no doubt that e-cigarette vapour contains less harmful chemicals than the classic tobacco cigarette.

Truth #2: Vaping is still harmful to your health

The main chemical in regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes is nicotine. This is a neurotoxin that can make you addicted. Those who ignore nicotine cravings can experience withdrawal symptoms. Nicotine is also toxic because it raises blood pressure and increases adrenaline levels. This results in an increased heart rate, which raises the risk of heart attack.
There are still many unknown factors, including the question of what the vapours contain and whether these substances have long-term health effects. Blaha said that people need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially harmful to health.

Truth #3: E-cigarettes are just as addictive as classic tobacco cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes and classic tobacco cigarettes both contain nicotine. According to up-to-date research, the neurotoxin can be just as addictive as the illegal drugs cocaine or heroin. Blaha said that many e-cigarette consumers consume more nicotine than smoking a tobacco cigarette, either by buying liquids with higher nicotine levels or by increasing the tension to inhale more nicotine.

Truth #4: E-cigarettes are not the best way to quit smoking

Even though they are advertised as a smoking cessation aid, e-cigarettes have not been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for this purpose.
A recent study revealed that the majority of those who wanted to get rid of their addiction by using e-cigarettes, still continued to smoke both tobacco cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

Truth #5: A new generation is addicted to nicotine

E-cigarettes are far more popular than any other tobacco product. In 2015 the US Surgeon General reported that student e-cigarette consumption had increased 900%, and 40% of young e-cigarette consumers had most likely never tried conventional tobacco products.
Blaha pointed to three reasons why e-cigarettes are so attractive, especially to young people. Firstly, many adolescents believe that vaporising is far less damaging than smoking. Secondly, e-cigarettes are much cheaper than regular cigarettes. The third thing that makes vaping so attractive to young people is the variety of available flavours, such as apple pie, vanilla and watermelon.
Another reason for so many people switching to e-cigarettes is that there are no unpleasant odours. Without the smell, vaping reduces the negative stigma of smoking.
Blaha added that he was especially troubled by the fact that even people who have never smoked use e-cigarettes. This is especially noticeable in adolescent groups.
It's one thing to switch from smoking to vaping to fight addiction, Blaha said. However, it is something completely different if the first time someone consumes nicotine is via vaping. Among other issues, this could lead to future consumption of traditional tobacco issues which might not have been started without the vaping factor.
