New Findings Show: E-Cigarettes Clearly Safer than Normal Cigarettes
But are these preconceptions justified or are these people misinformed? This is the question we’ll try to answer today, eliminating the prejudices that stop smokers from finally kicking their habits with the help of electronic cigarettes.
What’s behind the prejudices against e-cigarettes?The main reason e-cigarettes have such a bad reputation is that countless articles have been published putting electronic cigarettes in a bad light. According to these reports, e-liquids contain carcinogenic substances that are at least as harmful as tobacco.
If you search for articles on whether vaping is a safe alternative to smoking, you will come across many negative reports. It’s therefore no wonder that e-cigarettes have such a bad reputation.
However, none of the articles are based on long-term studies and they are reporting on the negative effects of vaping without providing proof. The reports are simply assumptions that have no scientific foundation and basically no meaning.
What’s even worse is that there are rumours suggesting these negative reports were published by the tobacco industry. Whether these rumours are true or not isn’t clear, but it’s safe to say that the manufacturers of traditional cigarettes feel threatened by this new technology.
Is there any truth to the prejudices against vaping? The first results of long-term studies on the effects of vaping have been published already. The verdict is that E-cigarettes are significantly less harmful than normal cigarettes.
A study published in 2017 examined the effects of e-cigarettes on human health over a period of 16 months. The study was paid for by Cancer Research UK and monitored two different groups. One group replaced cigarettes with vaping and the other continued to smoke normal cigarettes.
The results were astonishing. The vapers showed significant reductions in carcinogens and other toxic compounds, but only if the persons stopped smoking completely.
A different study analysed the vapour of e-cigarettes and compared it to regular cigarette smoke. According to health experts, the data suggests that cancer risk from vaping is only around 1% that of smoking.
The fact is that inhaling burned tobacco — as well as chewing it — is extremely damaging to human health and causes a number of health problems. As we know, this problem doesn’t exist with electronic cigarettes, since they merely vaporise a liquid. Even though this liquid isn’t exactly healthy, the simple fact is that e-cigarettes are in a completely different league to conventional cigarettes, as these studies prove.
What are the dangers of the bad reputation of e-cigarettes?The dangers of misinformation about the effects of e-cigarettes on human health go beyond a bad reputation. Not only do they keep countless smokers from finally switching to a less harmful alternative, but they also lead to other problems in our society. For instance, vaping is still forbidden in many restaurants, bars and similar establishments, even though it is legal. The reason for these bans is that the owners assume e-cigarettes are just as harmful as normal cigarettes.
And it gets worse: E-cigarettes are actually illegal in many countries. That means that many people don’t get the chance to change their lives and improve their health, all because of political agendas.
However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Countries like England, Canada and New Zealand have realised that e-cigarettes can save millions of lives in the long run. In these countries, there are many developments to not only legalise e-cigarettes, but also to encourage smokers to make the switch to vaping.
